What is genuinely new

The M6 model

Apple says the M6 has a 12-core CPU with two more cores than the previous generation, and a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core. Apple claims up to 30% faster graphics than M5, up to 1.9x faster Neural Engine performance and up to 25% faster LLM prompt processing. These are Apple's own comparisons, not independent benchmarks.

The PROLED models

The big change is the display. Apple says the tandem OLED panel reaches up to 2000 nits peak brightness with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and that the touch sensor is built into the panel itself, which Apple describes as a first for Mac. The press release also says Dynamic Island comes to Mac, hosting Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI, and that the 14-inch weighs 3 lb and the 16-inch 4 lb.

Which one suits which buyer

This is our reading of the published specs, not a hands-on verdict.

  • The M6 14-inch looks like the better value if you want the newest chip generation and a bright XDR display at the lowest price, $1,999 for the base model.
  • The PROLED models look aimed at professionals who value display quality, more memory (up to 128GB), more storage, faster Thunderbolt 5 ports and support for up to three or four external displays. They start $900 higher than the M6 model.
  • Screen size: only the PROLED line offers a 16-inch option in this announcement.

Before you order

Independent reviews and benchmarks have not landed yet, so the performance claims above are unverified. If you can wait until after the November 6 arrival date, early reviews will show whether the OLED display, battery and chip claims hold up. Prices and availability here are the US figures from Apple's announcements and will differ in other countries.
